đ Mine Town is a bustling underground settlement in the Gnomish Mines, offering shops and a temple to early-game characters.
Location: Located between levels 3 and 4 of the Gnomish Mines (absolute depth 4â7).
Mine Town is a guaranteed special level. Message: You know you have entered Mine Town if you hear the sound of a cash register, or the presence of town watchmen.
âšī¸ Characteristics
- Layout: A large open cavern containing several enclosed buildings with wooden doors. The town is fully lit, and there are 7 different map variants (including "Frontier Town", "Bazaar", and others).
- Inhabitants: Usually heavily patrolled by peaceful town watchmen and a Watch captain. The cavern surrounding the town is filled with standard Mines enemies (gnomes and dwarves).

Amenities:
- A guaranteed Temple with an aligned priest (useful for buying protection and identifying BUC status of items).
- A lighting store (sells lamps and candles).
- A general store, and typically one or more specialized stores (like a bookstore or delicatessen).
đš Orcish Town
One of the 7 Mine Town variants is the much-dreaded Orcish Town. If generated:
- The town has been overrun by an orcish army.
- The watchmen and shopkeepers are dead.
- The temple is converted to an unaligned altar with an orc shaman.
- The shops are ruined, their doors are gone, and only scattered loot remains.

- A peaceful orc hermit can be found living in one of the rooms.
- A special buried, trapped chest can be found containing a shirt of sound mindedness, sunglasses, and a ring.
- In the temple, a heavy, locked chest requiring a bronze key holds a guaranteed orc artifact, along with gold, gems, and weapons.
