Description
Camera's flashlight frightens the target monster. Can be used to take selfies with nearby monsters.
Applying the camera uses up one charge, and a camera with no charges left does nothing. Applied in a direction, it sends a flash along that line until it reaches a monster. An invisible monster is flashed too, but the flash carries on past it. If a monster you can see stands next to you in that direction, the game first asks whether to take a selfie with it; answering yes takes the selfie instead of firing the flash. Aimed up or down, or used while you are engulfed, the camera only takes a picture and no monster is flashed. A cursed camera slips half the time, whatever you chose: you then take a picture of yourself, which blinds you unless you cannot be blinded, and neither a selfie is taken nor a flash sent along the line.
A monster in natural sleep is only woken up by the flash. Otherwise, the flash does nothing to a monster that cannot be blinded by it: one that has no eyes, is already blinded or blindfolded, resists flashes, or is held in magical sleep (which the flash does not break). Any other monster caught in the flash is treated as attacked: a peaceful monster becomes hostile at any distance, with the alignment penalty that goes with angering a peaceful monster, while a tame monster stays tame. If the monster is up to two squares away, it also has a 3 in 4 chance to flee, except that a Shopkeeper never flees. If it is next to you, it is blinded for 1–51 turns when orthogonally adjacent, or 1–26 turns when diagonally adjacent. A Gremlin additionally takes 0–3 points of damage from the light.
