In GnollHack, monsters may have small status symbols attached to their sprites in the game UI. These icons provide important information about the monster's current state, level, hunger, or relationship to the player.

Generic Monster Status Symbols

The following status symbols can appear on any eligible monster (hostile, peaceful, or tame).

Name Icon Meaning
Bounty bounty The monster is the target of a bounty quest (active for Knights).
Busy busy The monster is busy doing something, preventing it from moving or acting.
Detected detectmark The monster has been detected (e.g., via telepathy, warning, or detect monsters) but might not be in your direct line of sight.
Eating eating The monster is busy eating something on the ground.
High-Level high-level The monster is at least 5 levels higher than its base level, making it significantly stronger and more dangerous than normally.
Grabber grabber The monster is grabbing you.
Peaceful peacemark The monster is peaceful and will not attack you unless provoked.
Saddled saddled The monster is equipped with a saddle and can be ridden as a steed.
Town Guard (Hostile) townguard-hostile The monster is a hostile town guard.
Town Guard (Peaceful) townguard-peaceful The monster is a peaceful town guard.
Trapped trapped The monster is currently stuck in a trap (such as a pit, web, or bear trap).

Pet-Only Status Symbols

The following status symbols are exclusive to your tame pets and help you monitor their health, hunger, and status.

Name Icon Meaning
Tame (Pet) petmark The monster is tame and acts as your loyal pet.
Cooldown cooldown The pet has used its special ability, and it is on cooldown.
Critical HP critical-hp The pet's health is critically low (at or below 25% of its maximum HP).
Hungry hungry The pet is hungry and needs to be fed.
Inventory inventory The pet is carrying items in its inventory.
Low HP low-hp The pet's health is low (at or below 50% but above 25% of its maximum HP).
Weak weak The pet is weak from severe hunger and may collapse or suffer penalties if not fed immediately.
