A Deserted Shop is a GnollHack-specific special room designed to trick unsuspecting adventurers. To the casual observer, it appears to be a normal shop, complete with the cityscape floor and a "shopkeeper" standing near the door. However, the shop is completely deserted, and the "shopkeeper" is actually a deadly Gargantuan Mimic waiting to ambush you.
🗺️ Generation
Deserted shops can be generated randomly in place of a normal shop in the Dungeons of Doom. It mimics the exact structure of a real shop (a room with one door and no stairs).
🏆 Strategy
- Identification: The most obvious telltale sign of a deserted shop is the lack of items on the floor. A real shop will almost always be stocked with goods. If you see an empty shop, proceed with extreme caution.
- The Ambush: The Gargantuan Mimic is positioned exactly where a shopkeeper would normally stand. If you step adjacent to it or try to talk to it, the mimic will reveal its true form and attack. Gargantuan Mimics are extremely powerful melee combatants and can deal devastating damage.
- Ranged Combat: Once you realize a shop is deserted, do not approach the "shopkeeper" in melee. Use wands, spells, or ranged weapons to attack the mimic from a safe distance before it reveals itself.
