π A Temple is a special room containing a shrine dedicated to one of the game's deities, tended by a priest.
βΉοΈ Description
A Temple is a highly valuable special room because it contains a stationary altar (shrine) and an aligned priest. Temples provide a safe haven for characters of the same alignment and a place to identify the blessed/cursed status (BUC) of items, make donations, or sacrifice monsters.
πΊοΈ Generation
Temples have a 1 in 5 chance of generating on eligible levels starting from dungeon level 9. The room is distinctively small, usually containing an altar in the center and a peaceful aligned priest. The priest's alignment will randomly match one of the three alignments in the game: Lawful, Neutral, or Chaotic.
π Strategy
- BUC Testing: Dropping items on the altar will reveal their blessed/cursed status if you are not blind. This is one of the most reliable ways to check items safely.
- Donations: You can donate gold to the priest to buy divine protection (which improves your Armor Class). To gain protection, it is recommended to donate 400 times your character level in gold.
- Sacrifice: You can sacrifice fresh corpses on the altar to appease your god, which can result in acquiring artifacts, increasing your Luck, or converting the altar to your alignment. However, converting an altar while its priest is still alive will anger the priest.
- Angering the Priest: Priests are extremely powerful spellcasters. Never attack them directly unless you are well prepared and have high magic resistance.
