✨ What Can Gnoll Overseer Do?
- Answer questions about the game: Ask about monsters, items, spells, artifacts, dungeon branches, or any game mechanic. The Overseer can read the actual game source code, consult the GnollHack Wiki, and retrieve exact monster and item stats, among other custom capabilities.
- Understand your current situation: When opened during a game, the Overseer can see your character's stats, inventory, surroundings, and message history to give you advice tailored to exactly what you are facing right now.
- Remember your conversations: Your chat sessions are saved, so you can revisit previous conversations whenever you want.
🆚 How It Differs From AI Chatbots
Although Gnoll Overseer uses the same frontier AI models as the ChatGPT and Gemini web apps, it is a purpose-built assistant seamlessly integrated into the game client. Rather than relying on generic knowledge, the Overseer is aware about the game context via specialized integration and grounded in real game data through custom tools made available to it.

There are three ways to use the Gnoll Overseer: From the game menu, from the About menu, and on the web at https://overseer.gnollhack.com.
🆓 Free and Opt-In
The Overseer is completely free and 100% opt-in. It sits quietly in the menu and will never interrupt your gameplay unless you open it. If you prefer the classic, unaided roguelike experience, you never have to touch it.
⚙️ Settings
You can customize the Overseer's behavior in GnollHack's Settings:
- Allow Spoilers — Controls whether the Overseer can discuss detailed mechanics and hidden information. Turn this off if you prefer to discover things on your own.
- Verbose Responses — Toggle between detailed explanations and concise answers.
- Send Game Context — Controls whether your current game snapshot is sent to the Overseer when you open it during a game.
