- Remember your conversations: Your chat sessions are saved, so you can revisit previous conversations whenever you want.
🆚 How It Differs From AI Chatbots
While general-purpose frontier models like the ChatGPT and Gemini are powerful, Gnoll Overseer is a specialized assistant built specifically for GnollHack. Key differences include:
- Game Context Awareness: Unlike ChatGPT or Gemini where you must manually describe your entire situation, the in-game Overseer automatically reads your current game state, including your character's stats, inventory, screen, and messages. It knows exactly what you are facing without you having to type it.
- Grounded in Real Game Data: General AI models often hallucinate or confuse GnollHack mechanics with other games or older versions of vanilla NetHack. The Overseer avoids this by actively searching the GnollHack Wiki and reading the actual C source code and game data databases in real-time to provide accurate, factual answers.

There are three ways to use the Gnoll Overseer: From the game menu, from the About menu, and on the web at https://overseer.gnollhack.com.
🆓 Free and Opt-In
The Overseer is completely free and 100% opt-in. It sits quietly in the menu and will never interrupt your gameplay unless you open it. If you prefer the classic, unaided roguelike experience, you never have to touch it.
⚙️ Settings
You can customize the Overseer's behavior in GnollHack's Settings:
- Allow Spoilers — Controls whether the Overseer can discuss detailed mechanics and hidden information. Turn this off if you prefer to discover things on your own.
- Verbose Responses — Toggle between detailed explanations and concise answers.
- Send Game Context — Controls whether your current game snapshot is sent to the Overseer when you open it during a game.
