Mummy Rot
You can contract mummy rot from mummies in the game. If their melee attack bypasses your Magic Cancellation, you contract the mummy rot. It can be cured like any other disease in the game.
- Eat a fig (cures disease)
- Use a jar of medicinal salve
- Cast a cure sickness spell
- Pray (if it is safe to pray)
- Apply a noncursed unicorn horn
- Talk to a priest and ask for cure sickness
- Quaff a blessed potion of healing, or a blessed potion of extra-healing, or a noncursed potion of greater healing, or a noncursed potion of full healing
- Any other means that cures a disease in the game
Stoning/Petrification
When a chickatrice, cockatrice, giant cockatrice or gargantuan cockatrice that has not been cancelled touches you and its attack bypasses your Magic Cancellation, you begin to turn to stone, unless you have petrification resistance or are already turning to stone. If you are polymorphed into a golem other than a stone golem and lack that resistance, you become a stone golem instead, unless stone golems have been genocided. Petrification is not instant: the game first warns "You are slowing down." and then, one turn later, "Your limbs are stiffening.". In your own form, on foot, unencumbered, not slowed and not otherwise helpless, you get at least one action after each of these two warnings. If you are slower than that, for example because you are Burdened or carrying more, slowed, or polymorphed into a slow monster, a turn can pass with no action for you, so do not wait. One turn after the second warning, "Your limbs have turned to stone." appears and you can no longer move, so the cure must be used before that. In a form without limbs, these messages say "extremities" instead of "limbs". It can be cured as follows:
- Eat a lizard corpse
- Eat a dragon fruit
- Use a jar of basilisk blood
- Pray (if it is safe to pray)
These will convey you also a 13-turn stoning resistance. Because you need to act quickly when the stoning occurs, most players keep a lizard corpse or a dragon fruit in open inventory when playing the game.
Note that once the stoning process has started putting on an item that protects you from petrification, such as an amulet versus petrification, does not protect you from being petrified.
Blindness
- Eat a carrot
- Apply a noncursed unicorn horn
- Quaff a blessed potion of healing, or a blessed potion of extra-healing, or a noncursed potion of greater healing, or a noncursed potion of full healing
- Cast a cure blindness spell
- Wait — Blindness is never permanent in GnollHack, so you can wait some time and it will time out.
- Pray (if it is safe to pray) — This can be overkill for curing blindness.
Lycanthropy
- Eat a sprig of wolfsbane (but beware, it's poisonous)
- Drink a potion of holy water (it's a blessed potion of water)
- Pray (if it is safe to pray)
Sliming
- Zap yourself with a wand of fire
- Read a scroll of fire
- Step into a fire trap
- Cast a fiery spell at yourself
- Be damaged by a fire attack
- Cast a cure sickness spell at yourself
- Eat a fig
- Wear an amulet of unchanging
- Pray (only outside Gehennom, and only if it is safe to pray)
Polymorph (Self)
- You will return back to your normal form when your hit points go to 0.
- You can cancel yourself with a wand of cancellation.
Polymorph (Pet)
- You can cancel your pet with a wand of cancellation to return it to its normal form.
Teleportitis
If you acquire teleportitis (random teleporting around) from a Leprechaun or a Tengu, you can cure it by eating a chanterelle.
Attribute Loss
If you have had your attribute scores, such as strength drained, you can restore the loss as follows:
- Drink a blessed potion of restore ability to regain all attribute scores.
- Drink an uncursed potion of restore ability to regain all losses in one random attribute score.
- Cast a restore ability spell at yourself to regain all losses in one random attribute score.
- Eat a blessed cloudberry to regain all attribute scores.
- Eat an uncursed cloudberry to regain all losses in one random attribute score.
Experience Level Loss
If you have had your experience level drained, you can restore the loss as follows:
- Drink a blessed potion of restore ability to regain all lost experience levels.
- Drink an uncursed potion of restore ability to regain one lost experience level.
- Eat a blessed cloudberry to regain all lost experience levels.
- Eat an uncursed cloudberry to regain one lost experience level.
- Drink a blessed potion of full healing to regain one lost experience level.
Maximum Hit Point Loss
If you have lost maximum hit points to, e.g. Wraithblade, you can regain them as follows:
- Drink a blessed potion of restore ability to regain all lost maximum hit points.
- Drink an uncursed potion of restore ability to regain 4 lost maximum hit points.
- Eat a blessed cloudberry to regain all lost maximum hit points.
- Eat an uncursed cloudberry to regain 4 lost maximum hit points.
Maximum Mana Loss
If you have lost maximum mana, you can regain it as follows:
- Drink a blessed potion of restore ability to regain all lost maximum mana.
- Drink an uncursed potion of restore ability to regain 4 points of lost maximum mana.
- Eat a blessed cloudberry to regain all lost maximum mana.
- Eat an uncursed cloudberry to regain 4 points of lost maximum mana.
