A Laboratory is a GnollHack-specific NPC room. It serves as the workspace for an Artificer, a peaceful level 37 Archmage NPC skilled in magical items and spellwork. The room is always lit, features parquet-style floors, and always contains a decorative painting on the wall.

Laboratories can generate:
- Randomly: As a random subtype of the generic NPC room in the Dungeons of Doom starting from dungeon level 8.
- Fixed/Preset: On various levels in Sokoban, the Castle, and Gehennom.

The Artificer offers the following services to players:
- Enchant an Accessory: Enchant rings or amulets.
- Recharge an Item: Recharge wands and other magic items.
- Fully Recharge an Item: Fully (blessed) recharge wands and magic items.
- Identify Accessories and Charged Items: Identify amulets, rings, and wands in your inventory.
